Materials I Use for Soft Pastel Painting and Nagomi Art

The great thing about nagomi art and soft pastel art is that you can get started even on a shoestring budget.

These bare essentials are all that you need to begin experiencing the therapeutic effects of finger painting.

The bare essentials

  1. Smooth white paper 15cmx15cm (at least 165gsm)
  2. Soft pastel (any brand)
  3. Sieve, penknife or any credit card (to scrape the soft pastel into powder)
  4. Palette to scrape soft pastels onto (any plastic surface will do)
  5. Normal eraser
  6. Art eraser (soft, kneadable type)
  7. Damp cloth to clean your fingers

Apart from these, there are some other items which I frequently use.
Though completely optional, some of them will enhance the effects that you can create of your artwork.
Hence I do recommend getting them if pastel nagomi art is something you see yourself pursuing as a passion.

Other items (optional, but recommended to have)

  1. Masking tape of 12mm to 15mm in width
  2. Basic stencil
  3. 0.23mm Mono Zero eraser
  4. Charcoal pencil (preferred) or 6B pencil
  5. Pastel colour pencils (preferred) or watercolour pencils
  6. A5 size tracing paper (preferred) or regular paper
  7. Scissors
  8. Small ruler
  9. Cotton bud
  10. Pastel fixative spray

  1. I’ve bought my starter kit from Popular Bookstore this afternoon. There was a promotion during its Book Fest period. So I bought more paper. Saved $10.60 💪😊

Thank you, Tr Ruyan for this post. It’s very useful for beginners like me. I’m excited to start…on my retirement lifestyle earlier than expected – while I’m still working 😁
